    Female Common Darter (I Think)

A close-up image of what I think is a female Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum). If the ID is wrong, can someone correct me please, though I'm sure that Stan won't be far away.

Shot using an EF 100mm macro lens and a great deal of patience if I remember correctly.

Exposure details: EOS 400D, Av Mode, 1/100sec, f/8, ISO 200.

Although I haven't managed to get the wings and abdomen fully sharp, the eyes are in focus. This is one of my favourite dragonfly images, and I'm looking forward to following in Stan's footsteps and getting some more this summer.

    Thanks for looking,

    Ade

It works for me, the key area is in focus, well done for using a 100mm macro

It looks good to me. As long as the eyes are sharp, anything else is a bonus.

        Hi Ade
A very nice female common darter and sharp where it should be. Moving to the right slightly would have enabled you to get the rest of the body in focus ( a benefit of using a 300 f4 for more working distance and avoiding spooking) but probably at the expense of the wings

          Thanks for the feedback guys.
It was a real challenge to get it with the 100mm macro. I seem to be using my 70-200 f4 L IS and 1.4x for close-ups of late, and I get the feeling that I will be using it a lot this year for the dragonflies.

Thanks for the confirmation of the ID Stan, I did try to move further to the right, but if I remember correctly, thats about when the little blighter took flight, and as time was a constraint I couldn't wait around for her to come back.

I did manage to get a MUCH closer shot of a Golden Ringed Dragonfly on the same day, using the same lens, as it was very busy feasting on a honey bee that it had caught, but as it was perched in the bracken, the background was a lot messier, and this is probably the best image I got.

Here is one of the Golden Ringed Dragonfly, taken again with the 100mm lens, and completely uncropped, just scaled down.
