    Open universty course T189

Well I took the plunge and signed up to do this course as I wanted to be able to produce a better quality of photos,
Its only a 10 weeks course and you get PSE8 thrown in as well.
It only just started and week 1 module is not to bad and all about how to give positive construction on photos which i find hard to do.

Yeah I now its not GCSE but where else would you put it.

I have posted a link for this site for all the other Canon users on there as well so maybe a mini influx of people
    EOS 60d, EF50mm 1.8, EF-S18-55mm 3.5-5.6, EF 28-90mm 4-5.6, EF-S 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS, Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 EX DC HSM

My ex colleagues signed me up for T189 when I retired. It included PSE6 then (2009) and I thouroughly enjoyed it, particularly feedback from fellow students. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I did this course 4 years ago and it was my excuse to get a better camera than my point and shoot, so i got a 400D, upgraded to a 40D then 50D and now 7D with various L lens inbetween...a slippery slope
Coming back to the course i found it very useful....when i started I didn't have any clue about apertures, depth of field etc...some would say i still dont

What I find very interesting about that course is that you must complete 10 credits.
“One credit represents roughly 10 hours of study”.

The time required / suggested to learn the basics of exposure is relatively short around 30-40 hours, yet some people have been playing with expensive slrs and lenses for decades and not bothered to learn this. To say that this ”short cut” is a false economy, is an understatement of epic proportions.

I admit and regret that I wasted about two years, sidetracked by obsession with equipment, and the false hope/belief that taking loads of pictures would be the way forward.

My Point – education (however you get it) in the basics is an essential starting point. Otherwise you need to get used to the idea that most highly motivated, dedicated people who have learned the basics will be able to “kick your butt” within a few hours, in any genre of photography that you’ve being “playing at” for years.

I Hope this helps and inspires.

          Hi ricewind.

          Interesting post.
I've been thinking of finding a relevant course and this may just be it.
I couldn't find any local evening classes in my area expect a full time 3 year degree (don't think work would agree to that!)
Are there any entry requirements except owning a camera!!!!?

              HI ricewind ,

The open university course sounds a good idea. As i am a pensioner i now have time, but what is the cost?

Wow, you have some amazing images there. I would be realy pleased. Do you gain any qualification with this course or is it just for improvement purposes?

No qualification but you can use the points gained to add to courses from the OU for a degree

I did this course last year and it is well worth the time an effort. It makes you go out and take photographs and look for images that you would normally not think about looking for. I spent and interesting Winter Night on the bridge over a road taking night shots. The hardest bit I found was selecting the fine 10 images for the End of Course assessment.
