10D - LCD display not working

Hi, I have a 10D and the LCD display on top is not working properly. It displays very faint, or partly constructed, characters in some of the sectors or non at all. Slightly squeezing the sides of the camera body makes some characters re-appear.

The camera works fine on auto modes and I can use the viewfinder to set some aspects in manual modes.

Is it worth repairing and if so how much?

    Many thanks for your advice.

    Les

Is the battery fully charged? Remember that all these screens and images are powered by the battery and if this is low, you will get faint images. Check the battery first

Best to get a quote professionally from a dealer of direct from Canon.

Looking at LCE a used 10D is selling for about £200. A repair is probably going to cost you at least £100. If you are on a budget (aren't we all) then a used 30D might be a better option.

Call your local Canon Service Center/Centre (dependant on your geography!). I have always found them to be very helpful...

Difficult to estimate cost v. value; depends on what parts might be required - but I suspect that it will be economic to fix... 10D's are still holding up well on the "previously owned" market - second-hand to me!

My tendancy is to try & fix where economic to do so - simply because I hate junking perfectly useable assets! Apart from anything else, an investment in a repair will stand you in good stead when/if you come to upgrade later and want to sell or trade your 10D...

Hi all, thanks for your help.
I dont think it's the battery. I have two and they both fully charge OK. It lasts for ages on a single battery and the rear LCD panel works fine.

Just got a quote for it's repair and service - £158.
I may try to get a cheaper quote but dont expect it will be much less than this.

            So it's a close call.

            Thanks again, Les.

                Les,
Check its not the CR2025 3V Battery found at the base of your Camera, your LCD at the back works from your big rechargeable battery. It's worth a try.

Re: 10D - LCD display not working

Thanks again everyone. I just joined this forum and am well impressed how people have responded to my cry for help with good ideas and information.

I will try changing the mercury battery as it’s definitely worth a try. I had thought its only function was to keep the time.

I will phone a couple of the repair shops to see if the first quote was realistic.

...but I am close to deciding to open up the camera myself (if I can) and just check that it’s not a broken connection somewhere. The fact that some characters come back when I squeeze the camera could indicate something loose.

If I totally break it then the decision is made for me.

Now where did I put my hammer…?

If you do take the camera apart, remember that it has a built in flash which means that it has a capicitor in it somewhere. You won't want to be accidentally discharging that in a hurry (it will be holding a voltage of somesort) It will give you a bit of a nasty zap if you mistreat it!

Re: 10D - LCD display not working

Hi all, after my first aborted attempt to get inside the camera I found these excellent instructions...
                        http://doug.kerr.home.att.net/pumpkin/20D_Shutter_Release.pdf[/URL]

Although I found my 10D was slightly different to these instruction for a 20D (mainly that the 10D has a large steel plate inside the rear cover - looks like the 20D doesnt) it's close enough to follow (if you try it you will have numerous tiny screws of various sizes which you have to keep in order).

So I carefully took it apart (about 30 minutes) and to my delight found that a tiny clip that holds the ribbon cable feeding the top LCD panel was not snapped closed. So that explained why the LCD partly came to life when I squeezed the camera body in that spot.

Put it back together (with no screws left over) and it all works perfectly.

£150 saved and my 10D back in full operation.
