Forum challenge 32, Silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

The challenge will run from the 20th of August to midnight on the 3rd of September.

You know the old saying “you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” well I want you to prove that wrong. I want you to pick very ordinary everyday objects, the more mundane an object the better. Then use your imagination and skill to turn your metaphoric sow’s ear into a silk purse.

I am thinking stripped down bare photography here, rather than dressing a tin of beans in a fur coat etc.

• The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
• The period of the competition shall be 14 days and the judge will state the start and finish dates.
• One Picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
• Please use a Canon DSLR.
• Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started will be deemed invalid.
• Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
• No Photoshop frames and borders.
• Include a brief description, and title; the image must convey the theme without title description.
• Please, no comments, on images until the round is over.
• No canvassing eg “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
• The guest ‘judge’ will pick 1st 2nd 3rd favourite images (Please don’t PM them to discuss their choices).

I "think" that I understand the challenge. I was in New York recently and came up with this whilst playing at my desk with some staples...

Hi Keith. Yes that picture is very much the sort of thing I was thinking of. Ordinary mundane objects photographed in a way that makes them look great.

Unfortunately images submitted must have been taken during the running period of the competition.

In this case that means between August the 20th to midnight on the 3rd of September. Given that its a common mistake and its very early in the competition, I presume that nobody will object if you want to remove your image and enter the competition with a new picture?

In this case that means between August the 20th to midnight on the 3rd of September. Given that its a common mistake and its very early in the competition, I presume that nobody will object if you want to remove your image and enter the competition with a new picture?

It was taken on 20th August at 08:40. Does the competition run from after the 20th? If it is a misinterpretation that it was taken whilst I was in New York, then that is not the case.

Please let me know...

Sorry Keith my apologies.

I have totally misunderstood part of your post. Where you wrote “I was in New York recently” my mind has automatically jumped to past tense. You posted your image on the 20th and I am thinking past tense, so I assumed, wrong, that the image had to have been taken before the 20th. I now understand that it was just your inspiration that was past tense.

Once again my sincere apologies, I am losing the plot mate lol.

Thank you to all those who entered the competition.


This was a difficult decision because in my opinion all the photographs submitted are nice creative images that are well executed. That combined with my relative inexperience, made it very difficult to choose. What is even harder than choosing, is trying to put into words my reasons for showing preference.

I would love to be able to formally review each image and discuss its merits, however at this point in time I do not feel qualified to do so.

So simply based upon which photographs appealed to me the most, I have chosen the following.


No1: Loz :D - A beautiful photograph that embraced the spirit of the challenge perfectly. T bags lol.

No2: Diana S - Love the repetitive nature and the contrast between the dark wire and the bright rain drops

No3: capture second - A really creative and clever idea. I love how the oof adds to the illusion of a city skyline.
