    Focus Stacked Shell

Dee and I are currently doing a course in connection with the LRPS which at the moment comprises trying out different techniques each fortnight, the current being focus stacking.

This one is shot with my 100 f2.8 L IS macro, the shell on a sheet of black perspex, live view and 36 frames and blended with photoshop. Although with a single frame there is a good chance most of the front of the shell would have been in focus, the tail was way off the focal plain

I still can never believe how well stacking works - always seems like a miracle to me, and I've done a lot of it with museum specimen insects.

quite time consuming though - Dee has done one with 3 model buses, offset and one behind another and that one took around 130 shots to cover all the bits - with that more surprising how well photoshop coped - took about half an hour

Guess that is that box ticked then! Next technique...
people at our camera club have been suggesting we do it for about 4 years now but we never quite got round to doing anything about it. This course is more to concentrate our minds on moving it forward and good to practice new techniques but at the end of the day our panels for submission are likely to comprise wildlife and nature images as that is what we know best and have the experience
