Anyone have the new EF24-105 F4L MKII lens?

Just wondering if anyone has the new version 24-105 & what your views are on it?

For the past 2yrs I've been using the EF24-70 F2.8L MKII lens on my EOS 6D but I've never really been that happy with it and certainly don't think it (or at least my copy) lives up to it's almost legendary reputation. Following a knock last year which required a visit to the Canon service centre to replace the filter thread, it was 'tested for focus & sharpness' and found to be OK but have have little faith in their service centre.

I've therefore decided to cut my losses and sell it. As someone pointed out on another forum they'd never had a lens they were initially unhappy with become a firm favourite at a later date.

I'm therefore considering the 24-105. Another option may be to see what reviews of the forthcoming Sigma 24-70 F2.8 Art lens which also has IS but is rumoured to be even heavier than the Canon.

    Any thoughts folks?

Bought one about six months back when released. Haven't used it much yet for a combination of weather and health reasons. Verdict so far is that it's "ok" but not the lens I was expecting or hoping for. With hindsight I think a 24-70 might have been a more sensible buy with the expectation that a smaller zoom range might deliver a higher quality image.

I will keep it for the next couple of years though with the thought of perhaps trading it when / if Canon release the rumoured 24-70 f/2.8 IS.

I wouldn't tell anyone not to buy it except for owners of the original because the upgrade doesn't seem worth the cost but don't expect a spectacular lens.

Thanks :) Think I'll hang on to it for a while & see what review of the Sigma are like - rumours suggest not out until July though...

Agree; mine is c. 10 years old and is my default go-to day-to-day lens. Might be worth looking around for a good quality second hand unit!

          don't expect a spectacular lens.
That's my understanding of the general reviews. Take a look at DPReview; they're pretty good at valued reviews...

According to canonrumors, the original 24-105 has now been withdrawn from Canon's EF range. New stock will obviously dry up but there might be some discount opportunities as suppliers exhaust their remaining levels.

Thanks chaps; think I will bide my time for a while, see what reviews of the Sigma are like when it comes out. I may even give Canon another chance to try & sort my lens out ;)

As to the 24-105, yep I saw that too about it being discontinued. If I were to get a 24-105 I'd go for the new version - reviews suggest that although optical performance may be only very marginally better if at all, build quality & IS performance have been improved.

I've had my 24-105mm MKI for a long time now,and keep telling myself its time to upgrade this model, yet its a lens I just can't praise enough like most on the forum its my go to lens holidays/portraits/team shots its the lens i trust to deliver sharp colourful results everytime.

I Would like the 24-70 2.8 but think i might miss that extra reach.
So i can't really comment on the new 24-105 MK II but if as good as the old one I'd have no hesitation in recommending it.

As to the 24-105 .... yep, despite so-so reviews for both old & new versions, most people who have it love it & I do fancy that extra bit of reach ;)

Not good news; but once identified Canon are pretty good at fixing things up...
If it's a software issue, it's a shame Canon don't have a similar system to Sigma's (new'ish) USB dock; although if it's a hardware adjustment it wouldn't help of course...

If I do go for the 24-105, I'd probably get it from Amazon whose price is pretty competitive (but changes daily!) Then I could check the serial number & return it if one of the affected ones ;)

Re: Anyone have the new EF24-105 F4L MKII lens?

I recently upgraded from the 24-105L Mkl to the Mkll version, and have not been disappointed.

If there is any difference in the image quality, then I haven't noticed it. It certainly equals the Mkl in that respect, and if it is any better, then it must be very marginal.

Where it is improved is that it is of a much more robust build quality, albeit the penalty for this is that it is bigger, and heavier.

It is claimed that the IS is better, although I never had any complaints with the Mkl.

I did consider the 24-70, but as a versatile everyday lens, 70mm came up a bit short for me, especially with the full frame 5D MklV.

Having the 100-400L Mkll, and the 1.4x TC, I can go from 24mm to 400mm with just two lenses, or 560mm with the 1.4x in-line.

Cost wise the 24-105L Mkll is expensive, but I did make use of the £150 cash back, and got a fair price for my Mkl in part-ex from WEX.

The 'bottom line' is that I do not regret making the upgrade, and am happy with the lens.

Fortunately, it is not one of those affected by the focus problem re-call.
