Anyone any idea when Canon will be upgrading these bodies ?

As the 80d is this year's model, I can't see a new one soon!!

It only seems like yesterday that the 7Dii came out... They seem to work around a 4 - 5 year cycle. Some on Canon Rumors are talking about a 7Dii upgrade, but it seems very premature to me - it can only have been out for 2 years. I've no idea at all when the 80D came out.

        7D MK II " announced on September 15, 2014"
        80D "announced on February 18, 2016"

"The 7D remained in Canon's model lineup without replacement for slightly more than five years—the longest product cycle for any EOS camera"

70D was replaced by 80D after just 2years and 8 months or so.

6D has been going since Sept 2012, 5D Mk II since March 2012, the longest survivors still available.

4-5 to year cycle sounds about right now you mention it Richard . I wish the leap , particularly in the dynamic range ect , had been bigger , better on the 7D mkll , since I got my 5Dmklll I am finding my 7D a little lacking , but am missing the longer range the cropped bodies offer. Not sure if I want to wait another 3 years for something better though .

The 5Diii trounces the 7D for dynamic range, although I am now looking for the next leap forward! I kept my 7D because of the reach, but I am nearly always disappointed by the results, so I hardly ever use it, and you get to the page where you just accept the reach is the reach of a FF sensor. Better to invest in some slightly longer lenses. But that said, I mainly work with 24-70 or 70-200, with some forays into my prime lenses. I don't use the 100-400 very much, but then you do a lot more animal photography than me.

I played with getting a 7Dii, but to be quite frank I would probably get an 80D if I really wanted the reach, because I am never going to be a wildlife photographer. I don't have the patience or the time! Instead I will (when my bank balance permits) get a 5Div. The ONLY thing that would change my mind was if I found somewhere I could reliably photograph Kingfishers diving in and out of the water when the frame rate of the 7Dii would make it worthwhile (given that I am unlikely ever to own a 1DX ii)

I liked the look of the lay out on the 7Dmkll , as I believe it almost mirrors my 5D mklll , which can only be a good thing . I can not really warrant upgrading my lenses , I only got my 300 F2.8 about two odd years ago , the 500 f4 would probably cause divorce ! I quite trust the reviews on d.preview , and they suggest the 7Dmkll is not all that much better than the 7D when it comes to image quality , though I am sure some would argue this . The 80D is rumoured to have a much better dynamic range , but the layout is quite different and it`s likely to cause me some fumbling when changing from one body to another . Perhaps a bit of a non runner at the moment in my circumstances .

I went from a 1D3 body to the 80D and the only two real differences in actual usage are the lack of a joystick to move focus points quickly ,and the fact you can't move quickly from single point to multi point instantly ,it's four presses on the control button to get back to single point ,aside from that which are niggles rather than problems the camera is a dream to use ,though I would still love a 1D4 and a 500f4 , but that's not going to happen unless I win the lottery

I often take both bodies out with me , and quite often end up using both , If the 80D did have the same layout , there would not be such a big question over it for me . I will keep thinking about it , it is a few quid cheaper than the 7D Mkll aswell .

Yes most impressive Jeff , as I have learnt to expect from you , think I will sleep on it till after Christmas now , and see if the price drops a little more . I would also really like that that 1D4 and 500 f4 .

I think you'll be lucky if the price drops further, more likely to go back up. Also the cashback ends on 18th Jan.
At present, the difference between the two is £410, the 80d is 67% of the price of the 7D MK II, earlier in the year the difference was less than £100.
