    Yet another Supermoon

Better images than my efforts of the eclipse posted already but here's a couple of the preliminary show:

I wasn't going to show this one as it's not great but at least it serves to prove I was up until 4:30 am

The first two were hand-held but the eclipse shot was the best of many all tripod mounted, mirror locked up with a 2 second delay yet still not sharp.

    Cheers,
    John

First two shots are OK and show the moon when it was still quite large, also well done for staying up.

      Like the first two.

From the work I did last night an exposure of 2.5secs is too long (there is a calculation, that I can't recall, that to avoid star trails you divide a figure by focal length which gives maximum exposure time) and might be reason for soft image though looking at image on Flickr the stars seem to have a donught effect. Bit hard to say of this was out of focus or camera movement.

        Thanks folks.

The exposure I can get away with in such low light is always compromised by the poor high ISO performance of my 7D. After deciding I didn't want an ISO higher than 640 and aperture of f8 the slack had to be taken up by the shutter and bracketing through the eclipse produced exposures ranging from 1 second up to ten seconds. There is a marked difference in star trails from those extremes but, as I was concentrating on the moon, didn't think it would be troubled but adjusting in LR to expose background stars I see just how problematic it can be.

What this tells me is that I really do need a 7D2

        Cheers,

More... it's impossible to predict what people like as the third 'eclipse' shot that I only added as a fun afterthought someone has just 'faved' on Flickr

          Cheers,

Sounds like you're got a good excuse to get a 7D2
