Great image, have the chance later this year to hopefully get a shot of the Milky Way in Arizona so a few tips would be very much appreciated
What is the bright light on the horizon

          Re: Castle Point Milky Way

          Thanks everyone.

Alan, the bright light is a ship. Next land mass from this location in NZ is Chile

The only real tips I can give is shoot when there is no moon in as darker place as possible, but also try to find interesting features in front of the sky, like rock formations. Also, don't under expose, or you will have noise issues (what I had this time due to having the lighthouse blow my pictures out) when bring the image out in Lightroom. It's a lot easier dropping everything down in post. Also, be very careful if alone to avoid injuring yourself and take at least one torch. Check out some videos on youtube first for more hints.

Thanks for the tips, have not checked how the moon will be when we are there yet and there will be two of us to watch out for each other

                  Alan,
Here is a link to a very good 'how to do astro photography' site.
Photographing life on Earth, our home on the outer rim of the Milky Way

The guy who runs the site has lots of experience shooting the night sky in Arizona so why not drop him an email - he is always very helpful
