Next to the harbour in Torquay, in a prime sea front position, stands a fine Victorian pavilion (called, imaginatively 'The Pavilion') that in its long history has seen use as a theatre, ice rink, up-market shopping arcade and music venue (David Bowie played there during his Ziggy Stardust years). Now it is closed and boarded-up with the council seemingly unable to find a use for it. The cynic - but not me, oh no, I'd never countenance such thoughts - may suspect that as a developer wants to build a fourteen story hotel on the site this may influence their inactivity. As the Pavilion is listed the suggestion that it be preserved by moving it to an island in the middle of the harbour has been proposed but this was, understandably, met with derision. Latest plans seem to be to use the Pavilion as an entrance lobby for the hotel (and tarmac the adjacent lawns and flower beds for the car park).
