    Vintage Signpost

Please be gentle this is my first photograph to be posted.... I took the shot of the signpost mainly due to the fact that I think it looks absolutely perfect, it is at the end of a lane filled with beautiful fields, orchards and Kentish houses.

Hi, do you mean the photograph is too dark?

I quite like these old sign posts Alan, some of the names on them stir my curiosity. I'm viewing this on my phone right now, so I don't see the full image size. I think I'd have been tempted, to try a shallower depth of field and blur the properties somewhat, making the sign more prominent. Well done for posting your first image, looking forward to seeing more. :)

Hello Alan and welcome to the forum.
You obviously have an eye for a good photograph.
I noticed in your other post that you mentioned programmes that you use which i have never heard of.
Do you use Canon's DPP software,i think you can download it from their site but more experienced members could confirm this.
Your picture could be improved just by adjusting the LEVELS using the software.

            Re: Vintage Signpost

The signpost is well spotted but you need something more in keeping than fairly modern houses in the background - a village green and thatched cottages for example
do you mean the photograph is too dark?
it is slightly too dark but the main problem is the colour temperature which may be correct as it looks like the shot was taken on a overcast and cold day but with a bit of processing to "warm" it up it will look much better - something like this

Hi Alan and welcome to the forum, the signpost has potential. However I agree with AndyA that the properties in the background are distracting from that potential. I wonder if you could have positioned yourself with the houses behind you.

                Re: Vintage Signpost

Thanks for all your comments, I think my trouble is that I see an object or building etc... and become too focused on that and everything else becomes a casualty.

I suppose you could say I'm like an over eager puppy at present, just enjoying the shooting at the moment.

In answer to all your questions or suppositions:

Point taken of the DOF, must remember to not allow the incidentals to take the shine off my key object

The Canon software can't work with my computers operating system, although a friend tells me I can get another programme that will allow me to run the Canon software..... it's all a little confusing at the moment and I need to investigate further.

Trouble is by adjusting the levels I feel like I'm cheating.... the photograph was taken on a dark gloomy Sunday afternoon, to change the levels would surely just make it look like something it wasn't. Or am I just being silly? PS. I have absolutely no idea on how to adjust the levels by the way.

Yep, those houses in the background do tend to take the shine off the photograph, way too new. Next walk I will see if there's a better angle for the shot.

I also did a monochrome shot, it looked great but for some unknown reason I can't upload it to FlickR????

I had a dabble with Ubuntu a while ago and I vaguely recall there being some software called 'Wine', this software allowed Windows apps to run within it? Good luck.
