This one shows the gardens much better, I feel. It is a shame the sky wasn't helping but by the reflections there was some colour. Have you attempted to apply a graduated filter over it? If I haven't got one at time of shooting I apply one using Lightroom as it can help lift some detail on days like this. I am no expert but just a thought!
