    First long exposure attempt

My first attempt at a long exposure image at the River Hodder in Bowland Forest today.
Didn't realise the amount of ND filters required to get it right. (sort of)
Would have preferred a 50ft waterfall but couldn't find any at Dunsop Bridge, so a flowing river had to do.
Not as sharp as I would have liked, but lessons learned - especially that the cheaper the tripod, the more unsteady it actually is. Buy cheap - buy twice !
Good day out though, and nice to get the shutter going again, it's been too long !

Also included a nice B&W one from under the bridge at Dunsop. Could have done with a set of ladders to get back out though....definately realising my age....

The sunset on the way home was also incredible. One of those right place (travelling back in the hills with stunning scenery) and right times situations.
Unfortunately, my 4 year old decided to have a bout of car sickness thanks to the winding roads and stopped me shooting. So on this occasion, it wasn't just the sky producing spectacular colours unexpectedly....
    Maybe next time

    Re: First long exposure attempt

Nice water flow in the 1st image, but both images are losing detail in the shadows and there isn't a lot of tonal difference in the images IMO

I agree with Tom, the first image is nice but not enough range. My eye ends up not having a focus point to start from.

Yes agree with both the above. Also I think the first could use a touch of rotation clockwise.

Thanks for the comments, and I'm realising there is sooo much more to learn than just taking a photo. I can say that on here, as trying to talk through it with the wife won't get the same response......
I've sharpened this up, adjusted the shadows, and tried to make the image a bit less "drab" as looking at it again, it was a bit boring. I don't think the position for the shot was marvelous looking back, and I could have done with something in the shot to catch the eye...but lessons learned and on to the next.

I think you summed it up well - just because you slow the shutter down you need to still have a captivating photo, in fact probably more slow by slowing it. Good attempt though and lesson learned

                Re: First long exposure attempt

you could have maybe tried standing in the water as it doesn't look too deep and also a lower perspective to get closer to the water
