The second shot with the lead in to the bridge works well but the first does not - the frame is good but what is inside is just disjointed - half a house and steps leading nowhere

The second shot - good composition, lighting, lead in lines & an an interesting picture as a whole - very well executed.

2nd one is nice, shame that shadow on the floor spoils the symmetry of it but it's a well thought out image.

2nd for me too Nat, is it worth just boosting the vibrance a little to make the image pop ?

                    2nd one as well.
Just thinking aloud about the steps and Stan's comment that they actually lead to no where...... if you had got down really low and had the steps with no grass behind and leading straight to the house I wonder if that would have worked, but then the fence is acting as a blocking barrier

Thanks folks for all your good C&C. I take Stan's comment and thinking it aloud, I agree; however, there was nothing I could do with the fence. David, yes, I could have gone down a little to get the house but then the fence was the stumbling block, unless I cloned it out. Re Paul's comment about the shadow, I left that in as it led to the castle entrance; an interesting addition, I thought. Without the shadow, the picture would have been just the arch and the castle entrance. I am sure David.s that I could enhance the vibrancy of the image via PSE.

Well done Nat for having a go at something different for you. Second the best and might be worth investigating a different time of day? Also a subtle HDR would probably be worth a try.

Thanks Ant. Due to my weight issues and difficulty of carting a heavier long lens for wild life photography, I am now turning towards subjects that are more accessible with my present equipment and hence landscapes. I agree with you that for these types of pictures, the time of day is of critical importance which will certainly add the "X" factor to the pictures. I have certainly noted this for future use.
