I recently got myself the Cokin filter set, which comes with a standard 1, 2 and 3 stop ND filters. Its first outing was my annual trip to the lavender field just outside Banstead in Surrey.
This is with the 3-stop filter, and was broadly the effect I was hoping for:

It wasn't helped by the fact that it was a very bright day, and the hordes of other people in the field (not unusual for a weekend at peak flowering time).
I am still a complete novice, so I did have a go at stacking the filters, and naively thought I could leave it on Av as it seemed to be metering something, however these just came out far too dark so I'll be practicing in the garden with an exposure app before I try that again.
