Re: Autumn at Blair Castle
Lovely colours David, but it's very soft. I assume handheld? You shot at full 300mm focal length, at 1/125th shutter speed. At that focal length, especially with that lens, it's a bit slow I'd say. A general rule of thumb is to choose a shutter speed at least equal to or higher than the focal length figure, ie, in your case, 300mm focal equals 1/320th or higher. Stick your camera on to TV mode and choose your shutter speed. Gives you more control rather than the camera choosing for you.
Keep at it, we're all learning

Re: Autumn at Blair Castle
Yes far too slow for that focal length which is a shame as the composition and colours are both good so it would have been a cracking picture.
Just to comment further on Garry's advice, yes, there is a rule of thumb that says shutter speed should be equal to or greater than the focal length but, am I not correct in thinking the crop factor (1.6 in this case) also needs to be taken into account? Therefore, for 300 mm, with an 'effective' FL of 480mm, the speed should be >= 1/480.
Cheers,
John
