Re: First snow of the year
Nice scene to wake up to David, I've spent quite a few enjoyable weeks holidaying in your neck of the woods.
This looks even better viewed large on Flickr
I notice from the Exif on Flickr that you made the image with an aperture of f29 which has allowed a sensor dust bunny to become noticeable. I would have gone for something between f11 and f16, with f16 as my aperture of choice for a scene like this. I would probably have chosen to focus on the tallest pine approx a third of the way in to the scene to capture a good depth of field.
Knowing your position on post processing of digital images I was reluctant to make a processing suggestion. But this image is one where the exposure is great for the light areas (sky and snow). But the tree line needs a lift of the shadows or a levels adjustment to lighten the forested area. I've tried a quick edit and it brings out more detail and to my eye a light dusting of snow on the pine branches.Peter

Re: First snow of the year
Yes needs a lift in the shadows. The range from light to dark is too great for the camera to cope with so you either need to shoot two images, one for the bright areas and one for the shadows and blend them or get the highlights right in camera and lift the shadows in postbprocessing

But there's always a danger when working with small files that the processing may add some unwanted artefacts. As this is a direct upload from my PC it may lose some quality.
