I would normally follow the standard composition guidelines and have more space in front of the boat, but I was distracted and didn't "see" the shot until too late. However, with the benefit of hindsight, I prefer the diagonal balance between the two focal points in the image, the ghostly sun and the boat. Happy accidents are a nice bonus.

That’s a very nice landscape (seascape?) Colin, really attractive and captures the atmosphere of the location very well indeed. A happy accident maybe but a good one.

Several years ago did the Hurtigruten cruise (more of a ferry really) from Tromso around the North Cape to Kirkenes and as your photograph shows, the scenery from the boat is wonderful. Just to rub it in, we did see the northern lights. Unfortunately it was from the moving boat so I ended up with green lights over very blurred mountains. i did manage to copy and paste the lights onto a night-time view of Tromso though.

We went with Hurtigruten and I cannot fault them. Their service was superb. It was just unfortunate that our timing coincided with the Norwegian Government going into clampdown Mode.

Hurtigruten have promised a voucher for the same holiday to be taken at some time in the future, though I shan't feel the need to participate in the "Crossing the Line" tradition a second time.
