How to increase the light output from the Speedlite 580EX with a diffuser.

I am sure to sound very daft in posing this question. However, I have gone through the instructions manual as well as a speedlite system book by Dennis Thomas and don't appear to see anywhere the answer to my question. At present I increase the light output by opening the aperture wider- this gives that much extra light. I am sure there is a better method and would be grateful if a member could enlighten me on this.

    Many thanks

There is either a button or in the menu of the camera for Flash Exposure. You should be able to change the flash output by about 2 stops

I'm presuming its not actually more power your after but being able to fire at a higher shutter speed and still get a good amount of light,
The only way i think is to up your iso, as if you + compensation on your flash you may over expose the subject ?

Forgive me if I'm Barking up the wrong tree.
