I have to ask, why is there a wheel in the middle of the weir?

It's where the ducking stool goes Actually I've been to Staveley a number of times and never noticed that. I'll look out for it next time.

Hello there again. The wheel is actually a sluice gate. When water levels are low in the river water doesn't flow over the top. So to prevent the river dying up and causing harm to wildlife etc they open the sluice to let some water through. The wheel isn't in the middle of the weir, it is by the side and can be reached easily from the bank. I have seen it in operation.

              Regards
