Lovely scene and well taken. Quite a lot of depth of field for f4.

If I am in the mood to take landscapes, I always have a tripod and even a flimsy tripod is better than no tripod at all, as you can always anchor it to make it stable.

Thanks Colin. I was kicking myself tonight for not using the tripod, I had Jill sat in the car today and I felt a little under pressure to get on with the task in hand! Oddly enough, tonight after I'd moaned (me, really ... nooo) about the shots not being as good as I'd hoped for, Jill said 'I don't know why you don't use your Gorillapod'. I'd forgotten that I had one. <slaps head>

        Andy,

i know this viewpoint quite well there were a few days of storms last year (or maybe the year before) and the great tree was struck down by lightning and split all down the middle. I,m assuming with the rising water levels the tree remnants are now in the lake. Last time I was there i had the company of a landscape artist who painted the shoreline tree before it dissapeared.
Agree with Colin you have given yourself a lot to do with F4 as far as depth of field is concerned, Ullswater is akward at the moment the sun doen't rise high enough in the sky, when it does the wind picks up and you lose the calmness in the waters.
Do like the moody sky in the background, will post the original tree when I can find it. When travelling with my wife in the lake district she knows I will stop at every photo opportunity, to reduce time I usually have the camera fixed on a Benro tripod half opened out wrapped in a jacket in the car boot. Camera already switched on at ISO 200 set at F11 2 second timer, all this gives me more composition time.
A grey breezy cold winter afternoon on Ullswater is a challenge in itself, top marks for your photographic dedication.

Think this might be the original tree, were the tree trunk has come from.

Very nice image. Like how you have used the stump to lead the eye into the image.

                  Yes, f/4 wasn't a good choice.
