    All steamed up

I loved the burnished copper of this ancient boiler. In the kitchen of Tredegar House, a National Trust property, Newport, S. Wales:

Thanks MX5, yes I'd really love to see it in action. Can you imagine what it would be like working in a basement kitchen with the boiler going full blast!

I lived in a few railway houses in my early years. One had a true utility room ... with a fire below the copper boiler much like that and dolly tub and mangle. Oh and those air-dryers with the pulley system ... remember them! Everything still worked when we moved in. Then British Railways decided to do the house up and it all disappeared. [The house before that had a hand powered water pump and a tin bath .... ah those where the days ... ].

certainly looks like someone was busy with the duster.

Thanks for the encouragement Stan & Di.

MX5 my mother had a similar arrangement with the boiler bricked into a corner of the kitchen. We also had gas lighting (lovely colour it was too) and I well remember having to wait on Christmas day for my father to come & light the lamp before I could check my "stocking".

Now my Great Uncle, lived in the real country, west of Newbury. Oil lamps, hand pumped water, and a bucket in a brick built "facility" at the bottom of the garden!

                  Those were the days indeed.

                    Russell,
Well spotted and taken. And well done for keeping out of the reflection (well, I can't see you anyway!).

Thanks Alex. It's difficult to see at 800px, but in the original image you can see that the copper surface is dimpled, so the light and any reflection is fairly well scattered.
