    Holy Trinity, Acaster Malbis

A couple of photos taken this afternoon. The first is the church at Acaster Malbis near York, the other is another Poppy shot taken not far from the church. I'll try and refrain from posting any more Poppy photos.

Two very different shots there Andy. I really like image 1. Great composition and contrast. First thing I thought when I saw it was how it would look in black and white?

The second image on the other hand I totally adore. I think it is pretty much perfect in every way. I love the composition, with the position of the poppy ideal. The colours and dof is great. The only thing that would make it better would have been if the poppy was turned slightly towards the camera. I think it would make a lovely wall hanger though, brilliant.

Thanks very much Garry. I spent a bit of time walking up and down the lane edge, looking for the best Poppy. I pulled out a few grass stalks here and there, hoping to save on post processing.

Both very good Andy, but I really like the second pic, just lovely.

        Would make a good canvas.

For me the trees in the first mask just too much of the church but the second is spot on

            Hi Andy

For me I would have to echo what Garry said about the 2nd image. Very well done

Many thanks Paul, Stan and Tom.

Stan, I had some other options with the church shot, but they were limited. :-)

              1. Get closer to show the spire, but lose the church extremities. This I did and I'll post that shot a bit later. :-)

              2. Hack off the overhanging branches.

              3. Alter my position and shot angle, but have a less interesting perspective of the church.

I don't always make the right choice ;-)

                  Thanks Di.

Here's the church from a slightly closer point of view. Unfortunately I've lost some of the church, but gained a spire. One thing that's become obvious since moving to an FF camera, is that this lens can suffer quite badly with distortion and vignetting.

                    Two very nice images Andy.
Tricky exposure on the first one, the second shot is a cracker easily your best poppy shot to
                    date.

                      Thanks Bill. :)

It's interesting how different styles and colours etc appeal to different people. I quite liked the composition of this poppy image, but not the bright sky, I didn't find it very appealing. My wife on the other hand, was quite taken with it and I now often find myself checking her opinion before making a final decision. :)

Congratulations on your 5D3 - an amazing machine and I pedict you'll soon forget the purchase price!

As to your comment about the 24-105L lens "this lens can suffer quite badly with distortion and vignetting", I have to disagree though- this is a wonderful FF workhorse and contrary to your statement, your shot here proves that - its very good.

                          Thanks Andy.

I've had to use lens correction on most of my landscapes, the vignetting is certainly noticeable. I've also used the 'auto' distortion setting on several occasions. Presumably this is because I often shoot around 24mm?

2 (3!) great images, really like them both, but I really love the poppy. As said previously, great comp, excellent DoF and exposure. Really nice, especially backlit.

                            Well done. Mike.
