    Re: BWC

As a member I go at weekends and to the members days plus have attended one of their inhouse photo days.

If you are just going the once, as it looks like it will be a long journey for you, I would suggest booking onto one of the BWC photo days as you get excellent access to the animals or birds depending on what you book.

When I go I typically take 2 lenses with me my 100mm f2.8 ISL macro and my 70-300L plus a flash which I use either for the macro work or to add extra light or infill shadows. I have taken a 400mm in the past but to be honest I hardly used it so don't bother now.

i will be booking another photo day later in the year.

I have to second Muscat's comment about the photo day at BWC... no "public" and the chance to be inside the areas of the various wildlife, foxes, Scottish Wildcats, they even bring out the field mouse and hedgehog for you. You get "help" in setting up your camera and where you should "locate" yourself.
I used my 100-400 when last there and have checked my shots and over 80% are around and below the 300 mark with just a handful at 400 and these were for the deer who decided to stay at the back of the enclosure in the shade as it was a very hot day. My 70-200 2.8 was the "go-to" lens for the day.

Thanks for response. Likely to be part of a trip to see my son who currently lives in Godalming. So will be in the area to start with.

          Re: BWC

If you are going to be local anyway then as a "taster" a public day would be good. They are open weekends until the end of October and all week during school holidays The photo days tend to take place during the week and outside school holidays
I find i rarely need anything longer than 300mm, so i usually have my 300 f4 and 70-200 f2.8 plus a macro lens and flash nut only use them generally for the mice etc indoors if it starts to rain
