    Finding those quality landscape shots.

    Hi all,

Just wondered if there is a website, app or database that logs stunning locations around the UK to enable us photographers to plan a days shooting? I often take my camera on trips etc, but sometimes find that the views or photo opportunities are not as impressive as I had hoped.

I'm after a kind of input a place or postcode and things come up in the area on a map with photos? I seem to remember seeing something but can't remember the name of it (bangs head on wall)

    Cheers

    Rob,

I'm exactly the same as you. Go out with great intentions and then nothingness. Or I'll sit there one afternoon and think Im going out, but where.

Here's hoping that someone has the answer.

if I'm planning a trip out I just image search on Google - then if I see something that looks interesting maybe check it on flirkr as well, but normally Googles image search gives me everything I want

If you type you destination into google maps and select satellite display Pictures appear at the bottom of the screen if you hover your mouse over the image it shows you where that photo was taken on the map.

I use The Photographers Ephemeris to not only find a location in my area, but to find out where exactly the sun is going to lie when I get there. It's an absolutely vital app that has saved me some time.

Couple that with Google Street view and you can find out where to park and the ariel view in Google maps can show you all sorts of info.

Stunning locations are over done in my opinion. There's so many pictures of Glen Etive in Scotland, that I'll never drive there. However, based on the right information and prep you can catch some great light in an area that might otherwise look boring during the day. It really all depends what you like yourself. YOu might prefer rolling hills with mist, or landscapes with watery foregrounds.

Re: Finding those quality landscape shots.

                    Hi Rob,
One of the top guides to locations in the UK is by E. Bowness - author of three books ( at present). The books are The Photographers Guide to The Lake District, & the same title but to the Yorkshire Dales, & again to the Peak District. The books include maps, where to go to, where to park, what time of day is best, difficulty in getting to the spot, which direction to shoot in, and graded locations by how good it is ( photographically). Each book has extensive maps, tables and illustrated extensively with photographs of the location. They are about £12 each from Amazon. The Lake District one is the best one to start with. Each book is a pocket sized paper back designed to take with you on location.
Other books - get older copies ( therefore cheaper) of Landscape Photographer of the Year and from that see where others have found great locations in the UK to shoot.
                    Hope this helps
