    LED lights for macro

Picked up a couple of LED "light banks" with 72 white LEDs from the local Robert Dyas for use as macro lights. Currently reduced to £9.99.

They have flat ends and side, so stand and lay easily, and also have a hook on the back for hanging. Run on 4 AA batteries (included).

The LEDs all seem to give out the same amount of light -

Here they are illuminating a simple figure for illustration - at 100 ISO they give 1/30th at f8 at this distance -

The light is cold, both in terms of colour temperature (but if too cold 'tis easy to shift the white balance) and physical heat, so they won't wither eg plants like tungsten spotlights. Quite light, and fit into my camera bag with no trouble.

Whilst not putting this forward as an amazing macro shot - it was the nearest thing to hand to use for ilustrative purposes - the figure came out like -

I think they also could be useful ouside, eg with flowers, to put a bit of light into shadow regions - usually use a Lastolite for that, but they can be a bit unwieldy.

    Cheers, Chris.
    Just chuggin' along.
