I'm trying for something a bit more "Arty" with my macro work this year so have started experimenting with using the 100 LIS on my 5Dmk2 with wider apertures. This shot was taken using f4, focusing on the eye of the bee as it pottered about inside a Camellia flower, what do you think?

Re: Honey Bee with shallow DOF
I like the concept and feel it is a very good attempt, probably not much you could do when taking the picture but I think if you were to either clone out or use a fade / negaitve clarity brush on the 2 stamen that are in sharp focus one just behind the bee's head and the other on the right hand edge of the picture you would have an even better picture as then the only item in sharp focus would be you main subject.
Great work keep them coming

Re: Honey Bee with shallow DOF
I like the controlled dof.
Sat and watched the bees the other day. Some how, they where always up at the top of the bush. :smille:Di ~ Trying to take "the" photograph.

Re: Honey Bee with shallow DOF
Thanks for the feedback, always interesting and helpful. I put this into a club comp tonight and the judge didn't get it, complaining of the limited DOF, the fact that the rear of the body and wings were unsharp etc (mind you, he still gave it a 9, for the composition, colour and detail? )
I can see this will be an interesting path to treadMy camera is helping to look at the world more closely, then record what I see to share with others.
