Speckled Bush Crickets - a pair

There were a few more of these in the garden again today but much bigger than those I shot last week. Thought I would try for two together in the frame, so transferred them on to a bit of grass and encouraged them to pose looking at each other. I set the camera to f16 to try and ensure they were both in the plane of focus but overlooked the fact that the fence behind, although some 3 metres back, started to show in the background

Found two more this afternoon and this time set a sheet of coloured card behind them

All shot with 100 f2.8 LIS macro, on tripod, the first with ring flash, the other two just natural light and all more or less full frame

Great set Stan. The blue background (for me) is a bit too harsh so prefer the 1st shot.

Incredible detail you have captured there Stan, I also prefer BG in the first image.

I agree with that. You are so good at these bug shots - have you any tips for a novice ?

          Thanks for looking guys

I prefer the natural background and would not have done the other one had the fence not been visible

A quick edit on the third one with a different toned down hue to the background

still a bit of a novice myself James - learning all the time but with any bug shot I first of all look at the angles to ensure the background is not distracting and them try and ensure the subject is parallel to the camera so the tip and tail in in focus. If both dont come together, unless its just for ID purposes, then I don't bother with the shot - there is always another opportunity / day

So how much super glue do you use to keep them from moving?. Great images Stan

Great shots Stan, the first has it for me too. Love nice clear backgrounds but the first clear enough for me!

Those are really good Stan - and thank you for the bit of guidance on technique.

I may be imagining it, but in the 2nd & 3rd shots the left hand cricket looks as though it has had enough of all this fame and collapsed in embarrassment!

The last image has really had me thinking driving around. Swap out the blue background for a photo of almost anywhere add an amuzing caption and you have a marketing winner!!

An idea but the crickets would be difficult to cut out successfully with the long antennae
