the hevers look good but you probably needed to move round a bit for the shield bug to get the eye/head in focus but then you might have lost some of the legs or the back

Thanks guys still very much uncharted territory for me hence mistakes .it really isn't as straightforward as it looks depth of field and iso come into it a lot ,I thought today I had won by upping the iso but that obscures the finer detail needed . And this is only the base model canon lens ,I might possibly upgrade to something like the sigma 150mm o.s for next year

The top one is a female hoverfly of the genus Sphaerophoria, can't tell the species from females. The bug is the Hairy Shieldbug (a.k.a. as the Sloe Bug) Dolycoris baccarum.

Jeff, I'd be interested to hear how you use your flashgun for macro (when you don't forget it ). I tend to stick to the ringflash because it's straightforward and easy to carry around, but I have thought of using a standard flash with a diffuser or reflector to get a different effect.

not sure about high ISO and lack of finer detail - may be your lens/camera combo as I still got a lot of detail with my mating robber flies @ ISO 6400 and quite often shoot macro at 3200 with no problems

There was no natural light in these Stan ,it was a case of take them or nothing perhaps nothing would have been best

Will let you know when I get it right ,I have a large diffuser dome fitted that I used from previous macro attempts years ago .in those days I had a sigma 180mm macro lens so I didn't have to get so close

Nice images, Jeff, and look good to me; macros of living creatures is way above my ability. My favourite is the second as the front parts are more visible and the wing detail seems more to the fore. Do love the blue colouring of the first.
