Thanks Stan. There were two mating low down in the grass and I managed to get close and grab a few pics. Then just sat watching them. Eventually they separated and I grabbed this shot of, I think, the male.

don't know about thick headed, he definately has big eyes.

About 10 cm or 4 in away. The fly was very cooperative and I had plenty of time to get the shot. Here's another shot.

The hardest part of getting this type of shot is stuffing the little beggars (you didn't really think they are alive did you! )

As said before - amazing - scary looking chap. How much is it magnified? Is is cheating to use a dead fly?? Heaps of those around here!
