Keep playing it can be fun. You may want to have a look at taking a few more of your #3 and then using some of the free image staking software to give a little more depth of field to the image

      Hi,
One thing I've read and practiced with focus stacking is that you need to move the whole camera, in very small increments, to get the best result. It's not as good to simply focus at different paints.

I use a Manfrotto geared plate to do this. I also use Photoshop CS4 to do the stacking. It works most of the time and is certainly best if you have a great number of shots (processor intensive, though), but I do need to Photoshop some areas of the completed image on occasions.

      Hope that helps,
      Dayve

        What is image staking?

          Hi,
Image stacking is where you take several separate images of the same (static) subject, but change the camera position each time. By moving the camera physically towards the subject each time, the area of sharpness changes. When you combine these images later, the software only picks the sharp parts of each image. This way, you have a macro picture which is sharp, front to back.

This technique is especially good for macro photography, as the depth of field is very limited, normally.

The technique only works where the subject doesn't move and the camera only moves directly towards the subject. The camera is set on a tripod and a special plate allows it to move a fraction of a mm at a time, by turning a screw on the plate.

          Hope that makes sense,
          Cheers,
          Dayve

Re: Hypericom and fucia from my garden

The problem with moving the camera towards/away from the object is that is changes the size of the obect. It is better to change the focus point

I use the Manfrotto plate for panorama's (works for macro panos too)

Brian I agree I have used both methods and get the best results by changing the focu on the lens rather than moving the camera

The manfrotto plate is a plate that attaches to the tripod and the camera attaches to the plate. The plate has a very fine thread that when turned moves the camera a very small amount - allowing accurate, small adjustments

Lots to ponder!! But I love the images - especially #3 - I like just a tiny part being in focus and the rest kind of dreamy! I assume you shot these indoors - tried some fuchsia the other day outside - hopeless in the wind!

Re: Hypericom and fucia from my garden

I acctually shot the Hypericom outdoors on the bush, it was right up next to the fence. The fucia stigmas' were was shot indoors on the kitchen table, the white background turn is a 4 pint milk carton, i forgot to move it when taking the shot. The back lit stamen was shot in the boot of my car, on the parcel shelf, it was after that when I went indoors. lol.

Thanks for the nice remarks though hehe. I have no skill, these are just happy accident lol. I am still learning.

I often think I shoul linvest in fancy backdrops etc,, but usually end up using something nearer to hand in the kitchen - will have to remember to buy milk 4 pints at a time in future!!
