Dear Stag or is that deer stag?

First post on the new site. Not been happy with a lot of my recent pictures, whether I am being too picky or my eyesight is going I am not sure.

Anyway you don't want to listen to me whine on.

    Imaginitively entitled A STAG!

C and C welcome, be gentle.......NO BE HONEST!

Dont know know if it is me but it seems soft and the point of focus is on the antlers apart from that I like it

Nice shot - its a bit overexposed though, but can be sorted with a little adjustment on brightness and contrast. Your shot shows off the antlers well, but loses balance because you cut him off at the knees!

Looking at the exif I wonder if the shot looses some of the wow factor due to being shot at 800 (it was a dark overcast day).
I have never taken a GOOD shot at 800, they all lack something.
        Any thoughts?

I'm going to be very honest.

it's a sharp shot, maybe a little on the over exposed side.

It would certainly have looked much better with the rest of his body in shot. I'm thinking maybe you took the picture a little prematurely. It would have been great if you took a shot side on with him looking towards your direction.

Agree with Monobrows comments, composition is not the best

NOT imaginitive and not correct then!

The composition points are well taken, I have never got this close before and got a little over excited I think!!

The colour doesn't seem right to me I have suffered this before on my 350 when using a high ISO. Perhaps it is to be expected.

                  Thanks for the comments.

You are like me, not happy with results, but that's the great thing EOS forums.
No matter what you think of your results, post them here because the comments and tips you get can make you think more carefully when taking shots.

How far from the stag were you?

A crop of just the head, antlers, and neck still leaving the space for the buck to look into may work better, looking again I'm now not sure.
Fallow deer have the flatter filled out antlers as above and the red deer (stag) have pointed antlers. :) can you tell I was watching Autumn Watch the other night. lol
