Black Backed Jackal

Black backed jackals are opportunists and hang around the periphery of a kill waiting for their chance. This was taken early one morning in the southern Kalahari when we came upon a lion kill. We arrived before the sun had come up and waited around. The kill was not very photogenic as it was in long grass and most of the animal had been eaten. I was pleased when this black backed jackal arrived with the low sun providing some warm rim lighting.

1DX with 300mm f2.8 L IS II + 1.4 III converter.

Nice shot Brian. I remember free camping in Namibia in a one man tent - most nights I was kept awake by these Jackals sniffing around the tent looking for left overs - most inconsiderate of them I thought ! Anyhow, yours is a lovely image of one of Africa's most successful scavengers
