Red Squirrels - Testing the EF 100-400L Mark 2

Santa bought me an EF 100-400L Mark 2 (although an Elf made me PX the 300 f/4). Anyway a far from ideal day ... really gloopy ... (EV100 of 8). These were taken at ISO 1600 using a 5D3 and hand held. Used DxO OpticsPro 10 'PRIME noise reduction' to handle noise, and some slight cropping in Photoshop CC.

Much better than the Mark 1 I owned many years ago.

    Thanks for looking.

PS: Quite a swell off shore

impressive - I had every intention of ordering mine today but just didn't get round to it - only problem I can see is my 70-200 2.8 maybe become redundent, could be worthwhile to sell it, after all a 2.8 its got to be worth 1k second hand in mint condition

These images seem to backup what I've been reading about this lens. Great IQ and better AF too.

Some good detail in the first shot - the northern reds seem to be much darker than those on Brownsea

Thanks everyone. I have to say after my initial use of the lens I'm impressed with AF speed, IQ and the IS is very good (I was at 1/30 to 1/60 much of the time ... and hand holding).

My tame squirrelologist says "Our population has a genetic element of continental animals after 40 or so escaped from an aviary into the woods at Formby in the 1940s. This means that their coloration at various times of the year can be quite different from the “pure” British race ones you may see on Brownsea, or in Kielder Forest or the Scottish Highlands. You do still come across “pure” gene British race animals on Merseyside, but not so much in our population."
