    creature of the night

    hello,

i have been a member browsing on here since may 2013 an have decided it it about time i posted a picture of my own.

this was the third attempt the first two times he moved just as i pressed the shutter, but this photo he stayed still long enough for me to get a lock on him

i am just learning at this photography lark so any comments and criticisms welcome,

    Re: creature of the night

Hello, welcome and well done for posting.

I assume this was shot through glass or perspex? And the green colour cast is the lighting inside? I would be very tempted to lose much of the green as you can, a shift in the white balance will help.

The beastie itself looks underexposed, hardly surprising really given the environment.

A good attempt and well done for hanging around waiting for it to sit still long enough.

I have a had a fiddle and I think got it somewhere closer, although only you know that. Hope you don't mind me posting an edit?

      hello mate,

yes it was taken through glass and the green is the lighting in the building.

settings on the camera (EOS450d with 18-55 kit lens) f5 1/6sec ISO1600. when you say under exposed could i have altered anything to get it better?

thank you for editing the picture for me it looks a lot me life like, as i have said i am still learning

      thanks nick.

        welcome the the madhouse

Alans edit does look a lot better and it has pulled the "thing" out much better - Looking at your settings it looks to me like you were pretty near the limit and other than introducing some other light source you've done well

Looking forward to seeing more of your images

Nick, welcome to the forum, and crikey you are brave for your first post to have been taken under such challenging conditions - a moving nocturnal creature, with barely any light, behind glass. It doesn't get much harder than that! Assuming you were hand-holding you've done particularly well at 1/6 sec, I guess you were supported by the screen which would have helped? Looking at your settings, I don't think that you could have done much more at the time of taking the shot.
So the only improvements could be in post processing, which Alan has done a great job to bring the Loris out; I see you took it in RAW+JPEG. Alan has shown what can be done using the JPEG, you should be able to do as good a job or better with the RAW. What software do you have?

You're welcome Nick. The only way I have learnt the few skills I have within PS is by playing and trying.

had a little play myself nick ,only from what i could get off the flickr image and cloned out most of the green and did what i could with what was available .if i had a bigger image to start with i think i would have lowered the dark background further to make loris stand out

Welcome to the forum and taking the plunge in posting an image

You have picked quite a difficult subject to nail - presumably this was at a zoo and would have been better to pick a subject outside in good light to start with

thank you for the replies, advice and the images.

alexr yes the photo was taken handheld and i was leaning against a pillar to keep steady. i don't have any editing software but it looks like i am going to need something.

stan, the loris is at the cotswold wildlife park, i have a few pictures from my visit of the outside animals but i was quite pleased capturing this image.to be honest animals are not my usual subjects. i was there for the oxford branch of the ford RS owners club regional day in august,

thanks again for the positive comments, i'll have a trawl through my hard drive for some more images.
