    'Gator - wild

At the Ding Darling reserve on Sanibel Island, we had got out of the car and were taking shots of a butterfly in the bushes along the edge of one of the lakes when Dee said "look just there" - I thought she was talking about the butterflies and said "where, cant see any more" to which she replied "just there in front of you" and about 3 metres away at the waters edge was an alligator relaxing in the sunshine. With the 300 f4 on the camera, I was much too close for even a head shot never mind his full length, so I went back to the car and grabbed the 100 macro - still too close, so ended up with this shot using my 40 f2.8 STM

Although we saw many wonderful birds over the 2 weeks being up so close to this super animal was the real highlight of the trip

here is the full frame head shot, using the EF 100 f2.8 macro. - I would have liked to do some gardening to remove the vegetation obscuring the mouth but Dee forbade me to go any nearer and anyway had left the scissors in the condo
