    Early morning grooming

Had an early morning visit to Richmond three weeks ago to photograph the rutting stags but only saw a couple of distant bellowing ones. Did catch a couple in a dark area against the light. Never going to be the most detailed of shots but one that I quite like.

I like the hot steamy breath , could you lighten the shadows a touch more maybe ?

      Re: Early morning grooming

Have only just started posting here from Flickr, so it may be something to do with my settings. Have to say my images on forum seem darker than on Flickr but even those seem darker than originals.

There's lots here that's of interest- the light on his ears and the ferns, the steam and the bird perched on his back. definitely worth a further tweak in PP with shadows/clarity etc

Appreciate this was at 420mm and f4 so may not get much more out of it but worth a go, I'd say, it's an intriguing shot

Thanks for commenting Bo. I have lightened it slightly on Flickr but to be honest, I think I preferred the darker version.

Hmm. I had a look at this on flickr & I see what you mean- the fur on the animal's neck is now a bit bland although the birdie on the head looks better.
May be just one of those ones that doesn't quite work no matter what. Still, you tried and it was something different and interesting so you still get a from me !

Nice if it was my shot I would clone out the four vertical shafts of light ,as they are what's pulling your attention away from a super subject

Thanks for the suggestion. It was the shafts of light coming through that made me take the shot, so I wouldn't want to lose them but I do think they could be toned down, especially the two outside ones.

Does anyone know why a pic would disappear but if you click on blank photo area, the photo is still on Flickr ?

Did you do anything to the original photo on Flickr? The difference is the name of the jpeg file to which the posts links, i.e.

                            the original one is <img src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5673/30844766310_cab4f3496e_b.jpg" border="0" alt="">
                            and the reloaded one is <img src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5673/30844766310_4a335001ff_c.jpg" border="0" alt="">
