    African Elephant

Taken from a small motor boat on the Okavango Delta, Botswana with a 70-200mm lens at 144mm so not that far away. A memorable experience.

EOS 5D III with 70-200mm f/4L IS lens.

    Thanks for looking.

I missed this one! Lovely shot Brian
Brings back memories of a rather scary incident we had, when one charged us.

Thanks Trev. We've had one of those. Very exciting especially as we lived to tell the tale!

Yes we were watching an elephant at a water hole, I had driven down a slope to get a better view. I still had the engine running, the wife had seen a bird leaned across me to get a bird book that was on the dash board, and accidentally pushed the horn.. The thing blared out, the elephant turned look towards us and came charging out the water, ears back, trunk raised. In my panic I grabbed the Gear Transfer Lever instead of the Gear Lever to put the thing into reverse. They were a few scary moments, I must have went up that slope at 60mph! Wife nearly shot out the door (passenger side) which I'd taken off, I had a video camera rig fitted that side.

We were in an open topped safari vehicle parked in front of a bush photographing bee-eaters when a fully grown bull elephant crept up on us. If our guide hadn't got the car started we wouldn't be here now. I'd heard something behind us a couple of times but neither my partner nor the guide had. It was the third time we all heard it looked round and there he was!

A friend of ours told us of someone he knew who was in a safari vehicle, one with side windows but a open top. They were watching a Cheetah when it suddenly jumped up onto the roof of the vehicle to get a better view of the surroundings, (I've actually seen this happen, one sat on top a vehicle) missed it footing and ended up inside. it just shot out the side window, no one was hurt, but you can well imagine the panic.
When we were up at Samburu a few years back, a couple told us the previous year they had a lion jump up and put her two front paws on the window ledge of the vehicle and look in at them.
