Great Tit (juvenile)

The summer has been a disaster for birds - so many broods have failed to fledge. Know of a couple of local dipper nests wiped out by the raised water levels, the Osprey nest on the Dyfi has lost 2 of the 3 chicks to the weather, with the third only surviving following intervention, then returned from holiday to find all the chicks in my Redstart nest had succumbed. Horrible. But at least a few birds have managed to get their youngsters fledged - great tit juvie in the front garden

My friend (lives on the side of the Allun river), has a very novel way of getting the birds through this tough time...he gets a peanut feeder and a cheap jar of peanut butter...he pushes the peanut feeder into the butter then pulls it out...hey presto, feeder full of crunchy peanut butter...the birds love it...and OMG...his garden is absolutely full of fledgling birds at the moment...blue, great, coal and long tailed tits, gold, green, bull and chaffinch, nuthatch, great spot woodpeckers, all sorts...doing really well. Great idea.

Indeed - I add fat treats to th peanuts - seems to work well. Got all of the above in the garden other than LTTS which are winter visitors (also need to add siskin and redpoll to the list!)

Good tip regarding the peanut butter.
We have LTTs here all year round
