Comparing the close up eye on the coal tit in the RAW version to that in jpeg I think it's clear you have much better control over true colors etc in RAW, which is to be expected and why you should shoot and edit in RAW rather than allow the camera decide what is best.
As to being sterile, well that will always be subjective but personally I find the clean separation between the two birds emphasizes the apparent patitience and deference of the tit towards the greedy and large pecker and it's what makes the photo special.
