    Fighting Black Tailed Godwits

We spent the day on Brownsea on Sunday and were privilaged to see the spectacle of black tailed godwits fighting, something we have never witnessed before. There were at least 3 different pairs who set to at various times during the day and it was an eye opener to see just how violent they get, from the simple beak crossing, trying to stab each other, through to one apparently trying to drown the other, as this sequence shows. All shot with 300 f4.

An extraordinary set of photos on Flickr, Stan, particularly the attempts at drowning! Nicely captured, indeed.
There's even something for the splashers in the last of the set (fighting black tailed godwits sequence 7)

              Thanks guys

Each of the fights was over in less than a minute and they just went back to feeding as they were before with no apparent injuries

I have never seen that behaviour before.

I still can't get over who the hell ever named them Godwits?

That's certainly a different set of images with plenty of action.
