Someone's had their feathers ruffled. How on earth do you remember all the different breeds etc, do you have a good memory?

      You just know.

There are those you already know and then now and again a new one comes along that you don't know. It niggles until you find out, so you have to check your reference books when you get home. That niggle time ensures that you remember.

Great shot Stan, I just wish I could shoot something close to it. We stopped by the Exe estuary on the way back from Cornwall on Monday, and there was a large flock of Black Tailed Godwits (and a few Avocets), but 100 or so yards from the hide we were in. With my 70-300mm consumer lens the resulting images were nothing like acceptable quality.

          Thanks for looking Andy

As Colin says some you just know, like the godwits which are quite common and redshanks. If i see something new, especially on Brownsea there are plenty of experts to make an ID or if not I have a few reference books at home

or you can just do what Cory and I do - "oh look - now that's a pretty bird and it would make a nice photo" There are a few that I would like to know what they are and now have 'the' book for reference or I can ask here but to be honest, if it makes a nice shot then that is more than good enough for us.

Oh and Stan. . . . . I really do like this one, the ruffled feathers make the difference
