    Cattle Egrets in flight

Well this is not a brilliant photo but thought I would share it as an example of having the wrong kit.

On our last day in Lanzarote we had to return our hire car to the Hertz office which then involved a 2 km walk along the beach/ prom to our resort. It being extremely hot, we wanted to travel light so just had the 17-85 on the 7D. We then came across a whole flock of cattle egrets on the beach but being spooked easily just could not get near enough before they took flight en masse - heres a cropped shot of 3 of them in frame at my maximum 85mm

Still a nice shot Stan... although almost a shame about that little blob of blue sky!

          The composition works well Stan.

Really like the composition, especially the wing position of the 3 birds. It almost looks like a multiple exposure. Agree with Mike about the blue sky, however if you crop off the top and bottom the letter box format would work very well.

Thanks for your comments everyone. Must admit it looks a lot better on here than it does on my hard drive.

A good idea. Heres the edit and another with 3 in the frame

Yes, I like the letter box format and the 2nd image is also very good.

                        Re: Cattle Egrets in flight

I would never have thought of the distracting blue sky until Mike mentioned it but since he did, yes the letterbox crop is better.

It wouldn't suffer being blown up in size much of course, Stan, but a skilful shot at 85mm. As you say, they really are nervous birds and take to flight very early if approached. Usually, I get a shot of their backsides!

                          thanks for looking Andy

I was quite surprised how nervous they are compared to our little egrets who you can quite often get very close to
