    Cormorants

As we got off the ferry at Brownsea yesterday there was a cormorant fishing close to the jetty. Both Dee and I are using the same kit with the 300f4 and converter and shooting from the same position, so how did she manage to keep him all in the frame whilst I clipped his tail, so have gone for a tight crop. 1 and 2 are Dee's, 3 is mine

Nice set Stan, never seen them in the water - only perched on rocks.

usually they do tend to dive beneath the surface just as you are framing the shot

Yep that's been my experience as well.

Interestingly there seems to be some uncertainty about the real reason why they stand about so much drying their wings. Common belief was that they don't have waterproof plumage though they do have a preen gland apparently.

                    Great images by the way.

                        Shags

Someone on another forum commented that this is not a cormorant, so now have comfirmation that it is in fact a shag, very similar and not a bird I was aware of in Poole Harbour

                          Re: Cormorants

When I first saw the images I wasn't sure if this was shag or cormorant. Not always easy to tell difference and in this case perhaps more difficult as the bird appears to be a juv.

yes, they are saying that is the case

please say if you think I got the ID wrong and offer your suggestions but not like someone elsewhere who just said "its not a cormorant"
