Both images are well composed. I like the open bill in the first one and the texture of the wet sand/mud. Unfortunately I think the light may be just a little too harsh.

thats strange as both these and the previous godwit shot were taken within a couple of minutes of each other

I've had another look at your first godwit shot and can see from the shadows that they were taken at the same time. However, the lighting on the first image does look better on my monitor. Were they all processed using the same settings?

a long time now but looking at the raws it looks like they were each processed at a different time with individual settings so that probably explains it
