      They're African (Jackass) penguins. There are two mainland colonies one at Boulder Beach, one in Betty's Bay. Viewing from the boardwalk only.

        I love these guys, and who wouldn't, always a comedy and very obliging for the camera.

        Unfortunately I had neither equipment or photographic intent when I was there many moons ago...

          The humboldy penguin is in fact a South American species, looked it up on Wiki but the african penguin is very similar and is its closest relative

            Makes sense Stan Spheniscus humboldti vs Spheniscus demersus similar latitude, but rather different longitude. I wonder if it would be possible to get out to one of the "small offshore islands" mentioned on the information board. That could be a togs dream trip.
