    Jay

Not and easy bird to photograph as they are a bit wary, this one was quite high up in a large tree at Rutland Water but was more tolerant than usual.

A good shot of a very shy bird. David I notice in your recent postings with the 7DII you are using relatively high (compared with what I can use on a 550D) ISO. Are you setting this? Or are you setting shutter speed and aperture and using auto-ISO?

I use Auto ISO mainly as I don't usually have the luxury of taking bird photos in ideal weather or light. In addition many shots are against a very light background so I need to use exposure compensation and Auto ISO allows me more freedom to do this. As even perched birds exhibit constant rapid movements requiring at least 1/640th irrespective of focal length then higher ISOs help here too. This Jay was taken fairly early in dull, overcast and slightly misty conditions.

All this points to the considerable advantage the 7DII has over the previous model in the area of high ISO noise.

Thanks David, very helpful. It's becoming increasingly inevitable that I'll have to take the plunge!

really...you must have had a Friday model - mine was OK up to 1000 anything higher and I was heading straight into noise

                  Probably Ian
Perhaps ISO 400 was an exaggeration - more like your findings.
I was all set to ditch Canon but then the 70D & 6D came on the scene and I'm one happy bunny again.
This is why I've never been tempted by the 7D2.

I use Auto ISO quite a lot for wildlife but I've got my upper limit set to ISO 1600
Down at the river behind our house can be quite dark due to the steep wooded banks so shooting the Otters & Dippers can be quite a challenge

A friend bought my old 7D although I think he's getting tempted by the MkII

Since moving to the 5D its opened my eyes to higher ISO numbers and now think nothing of going into the high 4 figures and even a few at 10k plus
