    Black Skimmer

    Quite a flock of these members of the tern family on the beach on a couple of evenings. Their bills are quite unique in that the lower mandible is longer than the upper and they feed by using this as they skim across the water to pick up small fish or insects just above or below the surface. Shot with 70-200 f2.8 and 1.4x

    nice first photo, but great action shot on the 2nd Stan, you must be really pleased with that

        Well done Stan, I have lots of pictures of Skimmers but have not managed to get them actually skimming good skill

          they are quite a common bird there and were skimming quite a bit but most of the time facing and going away from me

          but second one looks a little out of focus
          checking the hard drive image on my screen, it is pin sharp so blame flickr
