You have caught the robin well in full song but Christmas Card - for me no, the background is a bit busy and not really Christmassy. We did a robin a couple of years ago on a branch with snow added in photoshop. Have done something similar for this year but with a red squirrel

Problem is I couldn't do anything with the background as it was fully open with a 1.4x on.

With robins being so common, if it were me then I would have waited till he perched against a clear background - that is what I look for with all my bird images as I don't want anything in the frame that takes attention away from the subject

we unfortunately don't all have super wide open sites like stan seems to have ,so yes the top one works for me ,with a bit of messing around in p/s and using some of flickrs xmas bolt ons it could easily be used tony

Not sure about that, surely there are bushes and small trees everywhere, probably what you don't have is Stan's patience to wait until the bird is out in the open. To be honest I'm not bothered about getting clean backgrounds but credit where it's due. I like the first and third shots but not very Christmas like, maybe it would be better to find a holly bush and wait.

I somehow like the second picture. Yes, Stan's patience for the right moment is much admired & trying to fall in line with my wildlife shots. Of course one off/difficult subjects have to be taken as soon as you see it.

I'm prepared to forgive a less than ideal background for such a perfect pose

                    Cheers,

I like all three Tony but do not have the processing skills to " turn it into a xmas card " i do admire Stans patience to always get the clean shot but like John I also like to capture my subjects in their natural environments which often means less than clean backgrounds.

Not sure about Christmas cards , but they are nice photos , not to put off by the background , though the background would of suited a Reed Warbler or Bunting a bit better perhaps .
