Why do we insist on starting a new thread each time for the same item..

It gets annoying, you have to trawl through thread after thread of the same birds, at the same locations, to find something different. I have got to the point I do not even bother coming in here to comment as anything I'd be interested in rapidly gets pushed off the first page by 20 posts on the same subject, ohh and I do it too.

I presume this is because each member would like some comment on his/her picture. They may be the same subject, same bird for example but taken by a different member. For example if Jeff or Stan post a picture of say a Waxwing, it might be the same subject but taken by two different photographers. I am sorry, Tony, your post could drive away many budding amateur photographers. The forum is a learning curve for many of us.

Nat, I mean from the same person, multiple threads of the same subject, but of the same thing, instead of simply adding to the original thread. As I said I am guilty too, I just commented why do we?

I can see your point Tony , I have noticed this on other forums ( not Photography related ) , how quickly things can get pushed to the bottom , I am not sure what the answer is , but it`s shame if it`s stopped you bothering to comment . I have not looked for it here , but you can on some forums click on recent unread threads or a similar tab , perhaps that is an answer for you ?

I dont have a problem with it Tony as having viewed a thread and commented if I want to I very rarely revisit that same thread so would end up missing quite a few nice photographs if they were added to the same one. When I visit the forum I just look for new posts that I have not seen before irrespective of the subject material but thats just me and we are all different.

No issue for me either. Generally etiquette would say no to adding your own images to someone else's thread.

Adding new images to a thread you've already started could mean those images would be overlooked.

Re: Why do we insist on starting a new thread each time for the same item..

ant and steve above have summed it up precisely ,unfortunately with birding in particular it can be very seasonal i.e ,short eared owls ,waxwings ,fieldfares etc they are popular subjects and once in a area lots of photographers will gather to take the same subject .
personally i have always taken the stance of not hiding the where and when of a shot so on this forum in particular you will have me/nat/steve all in a hour or so's drive of one another and all doing there own take on the subjects .
this unfortunately can also sometimes backfire as a lot of pure twitchers often gather there information from our posts on various media and then have a attitude of oh you photographers are to close to the birds ,makes me wonder whats the right approach sometimes .

the main problem if it is one with forums is if you are polite (and this is one of the politest of them all) and respond to comments with a nice thank you for your comments post then your particular photo will go to the top of the page again .once everyone has finished commenting though it will gradually drop down the board and out of sight .i,m not sure if this is what your alluding to with this tony

Jeff re location I too haven't a real issue with sharing locations. But if you feel its a problem perhaps PM's to those interested might be a better approach if you do decide to share.

The behaviour which I find a bit frustrating is when every single comment is followed by an individual thank you post. Obviously everyone has their own view on this and mine is of no more weight than any other, but I prefer waiting until there have been several responses before posting a thank you.

Generally I tend to respond to several comments, positive or negative at one time. However, either approach is OK with me.

Well, IMHO it is the members choice whether to wait for a few more comments or not. It is also possible that a member only gets that one comment!

Don't think anyone was saying it wasn't Nat. Think Enigma was just saying he found a bit frustrating which I can understand but doesn't bother me personally.
